Why JiFFest Script Development Competition?

Because JiFFest would like to emphasize the importance of story telling and scriptwriting in building the emerging Indonesian film industry.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon made a career of it. Quentin Tarantino created a cult out of it. Billy Wilder liked it hot, and comical at times. Teguh Karya broke your heart with it. Francis Ford Coppola turned it into a family saga.

Last year’s winners in this competition were:

• Crescent Moon Over The Sea by Yuli Andari M (Short Documentary category)
• The Shadow Government by Iwan Setiawan (Long Documentary category)
• Love on the Road by Eric Bachtiar (Short Fiction category)
• Miss Indonesia by Lucky Kuswandi and Edward Gunawan (Feature Fiction category)
• Swimmer and Daughter by Salman Aristo (Feature Fiction category)
• Me and Bram by Ayu Sulistyowati (Special Mention, Feature Fiction category)

Meanwhile, four short films that won the competition in 2005 had their premiere in JIFFest last year. They were The Anniversaries by Ariani Darmawan, The Last Believer by Tumpal Tampubolon, Positive+ by Astu Prasidya and Utawa Tresno, and Death in Jakarta by Ucu Agustin. All of these films have traveled extensively to numerous local and international film festivals, such as Festival Internazionale dei Circoli de Cinema in Italy (Positive +, The Last Believer, The Anniversaries), Tampere International Short Film Festival in Finland (Death in Jakarta) and Pusan International Film Festival in Korea (The Anniversaries).
